Symbols are a powerful form of communication. As a Validation and Dementia practitioner, I pay close attention to symbols because they represent a significant object, person, or action from the past that has emotional meaning. When a loved one uses symbols, i.e. a doll, stuffed animals, ring, paper, dish towels, or even another person – pause and look at this as an opportunity to understand, get closer and connect with your loved one. These symbols should be thought of as a language. They are a guide to understanding who or what gives them significance and purpose now but, most importantly, they connect us to a real human need.
